Community leaders Reuben Harris and John Guinness share their history of advocating for Shaker Schools students - the foundation of our advocacy at NewONEShaker.
In the 1990s, several groups of concerned parents and citizens gathered to address the racial disparities linked to student academic performance and discipline. From this, the Community Advocacy Group (CAG) and other advocacy groups formed and met regularly with the Board of Education, various district leaders, and teachers. Over the years, CAG provided research and trainings, as well as financial and academic support to Shaker Heights City Schools.
In the fall of 2019, members of CAG once again decided to retire. A new group of parents and citizens, inspired by CAG, formed NewONEShaker.
Led by Founding Executive Director Angel Michelle Chapman, NewONEShaker continues CAG's legacy as advocates, "filling the gaps" for equity in the community and our schools.
NewONEShaker collaborates with local organizations in new ways. We are creating relationships, systems, and structures that "fill the gaps" for equitable access to education and services for all students and families in our community.
Shaker Heights is a community focused on equitably developing the full potential and well-being of all students and their families.
NewONEShaker advocates for equity and inclusion in primary and secondary education and in our community. We also lead by example:
